Come with Me to Primary

I've figured out what I'm going to do from now on. The title of my blogs are going to be Primary related. Below is a link to the song, "Come with Me to Primary". You can listen if you like, but I think this feature from the church's website is nifty, so I'm adding it to my blog post!

This last weekend was our first Sunday teaching in Primary. I think it went alright, but I know it can get better. At first we were kind of uncomfortable with starting a new calling around a group of children we don't know. When we were given more details about the class we'd be teaching, we were supposed to sit with the kids. There are 8 children in our class. It doesn't seem that many, but sitting in Primary, there wasn't room for Andrew to sit with me and the kids. I took the seat in the aisle while Andrew remained standing in the back of the room. The little boy next to me took to me almost instantly. Not ten seconds after I sat down was he wanting to sit on my lap. It threw me off at first, but instantly made me more comfortable with being there.

I think I learned a lot more than the children did. We have a very hyper little boy and a little girl who has a crush on him, a very talkative little girl, a set of identical twins, and two boys who only talk to each other unless I call them individually and ask them a question. I also learned that I should keep a small package of tissues in my bag, just in case. I may also want to make a bathroom pit stop before heading to class time. Andrew was in and out of the classroom practically the whole time. Two boys had to go to the bathroom and one girl sneezed so hard that she had stuff hanging from her nose.

All in a Sunday's work? I think so. We just need to figure out a solid working strategy and stick to it. After that, I think we'll do alright. We just need to experiment with them, find out what gets their attention and what will keep them calm during class, if that's even possible. Next week's lesson is almost finished and since it's a fast Sunday, no treats. This actually works out perfectly. I didn't prepare any treats for them the first lesson because we weren't sure which class we'd be teaching. What I need to do now is get a hold of the parents and find out what allergies any of the children have, if any.

It'll only get better from here on out.

1 Thoughts!:

  1. andrew has no allergies. i'm glad that he took to you so quickly.
